Podcast Episode 1

Creating a podcast is something that I’ve been wanting to do for a long time.

Ever since, during the creation of the old version of my website, when I recorded a little spoken introduction and I was hiding under my duvet to record it because I was so embarrassed about my voice (!), I’ve felt the urge to do more.

In the past couple of years, I’ve been doing loads more public speaking, and thankfully no longer mind my voice.

In fact, I think it’s ok.

This is not the time to go on a diet

Now (ie, any time between now and Spring) is not the time to go on a diet.

I know how much you want to.

You’ve eaten loads.

Pretty much non-stop.

The biscuits. The crackers. The cheese. The After Eights. The flatbread with red onion. The sausages (little and big ones). The mince pies. The jelly. The pate. The sausage rolls (big and little ones). The tubes of sweets. The chocolates. The crisps. The nachos. Oh the nachos with all the dips.

In defence of sugar

(I totally know I shouldn’t be writing this, what with me being a nutritionist and all, but sometimes stuff just needs to be said)

Sugar makes stuff taste nice.

Yes it does.

Just like fat also makes stuff taste nice.

But unlike fat, (or at least the fats which we like to think of as good fats) sugar is pretty much a demon ingredient. Anyone who cares about their health hates sugar. Some people won’t touch the stuff because it’s a poison.

Do you practice what you preach?

I was asked this recently by a friend*

*a nice person, but someone who clearly doesn’t know me that well because that kind of question would never come from someone who has seen me choffing ice-cream on the beach.

We were talking about food (as I often seem to end up doing) and they very seriously asked:

“Do you practice what you preach?”

Which struck me as an odd question and it hit me hard. In the gut. Like the thwack of a kipper.

So I answered, with a very serious face:

“No, of course not”.

Clean eating is a crock of, erm, dirt

Everywhere I look, people are talking about ‘clean eating’.

“This chocolate brownie might look naughty, but it’s clean”

“It’s time to start eating clean again”

“How I eat clean on a budget”

Blah blah and blah once more.

It drives me a tiny bit crazy, and I want to explain why you’ll never hear me recommending that you eat clean.

Don’t ‘try’ to eat better.

How often do you say the phrase:  ‘I am trying to …… (quit sugar) (eat less) (lose weight) (drink less coffee)’?

(whatever might be relevant to you)

I know how it is: we want to be doing something good for our health, so we do our best to ditch the stuff that we feel might be causing us problems.

But, you know, LIFE gets in the way.

Someone in the office has a birthday, so they bring in cake.

You get invited to a conference, and they have nibbles.

It’s all just a continuum

And I don’t mean a space-time continuum like in Back to the Future (although, that was one of the best films of my youth-hood and maybe I should do more ‘where we’re going, we don’t need roads’ when I pull out of the driveway in my Delorean Ford Focus)

When I say it’s all just a continuum, I am talking about health, food and your approach to eating.

(btw, totally ignore this post if you are not interested in eating better or feeling better)

Surviving Christmas without trashing all the good work: part 2

Christmas is getting close. And, unless you live in a cave, you’ll have noticed that the festive season has  pretty much already started. The meet-ups, the ‘let’s go out for a drinkie/coffee/cake’ invites will already be flying, and the temptation to treat yourself because ‘it’s Christmas’ becomes a hard one to resist. And if you … Read more
